Seven month course from August 2015 to March 2016.
Simon (Belgium)
Initially, my brother came up with the idea of coming to China to study kung fu. It seemed a really interesting idea and after reading up on kung fu (training, philosophy, culture,...), I really wanted to join him. I liked the idea of getting away from Western civilization and focus on training my body and spirit.
Being at kunyu mountain academy for 7 months has greatly improved my body and mental condition. I became stronger, more flexible, faster and more coordinated. Mentally, I am more resilient and more confident than before. This is all clearly visible when I perform a form or when I step into the ring for some Chinese kickboxing sparring. I'm sure all of these gains will help me in the future.
First of all, my Shifu, Shifu Gao, has always strived for making our group the best he possibly can. By focusing on the group, he pushes everyone to participate in making the training as good as possible. Especially because you train week in, week out the group is very important to keep you going. This means that every group member also played a big role during my training. They helped me, as I hope I helped them, at becoming better.
It seems like this school attracts a lot of like-minded people. I've met the nicest, most interesting people here. Often people with an open and positive look on life. This makes that the school is a nice environment to live, which in turn has a positive effect on the training.
When you have a problem, the translators are always eager to help you. For example, they will help you with your visa or getting a Phone Sim card and other practical things. This makes living in China so much easier!
As the school is situated in a national park, the surroundings are pretty amazing. The academy is surrounded by mountains and lakes, which for me gave me that extra boost. It's really fun to go explore the mountains during the weekend. And if you want to change it up and get out of nature to go more into civilization, there is a city, Yantai, nearby with a cheap hostel where you can have a good time.
All of this contributes to making the Kunyu Mountain Traditional Shaolin Martial Arts Academy a perfect place to come study Shaolin kung fu!
